I chose a shallow depth of field for this image. One just to show the classic example and two to be able to have a very controlled setting to become more confident in the concept.
While walking around downtown, Riley and I stumbled upon the 9/11 memorial that I knew we had but never had seen before. I was taken back and felt strong emotion from it. it was hard finding the right view to take the picture without getting buildings in the shot. I think this image has strong emotion. it shows the destruction very prominent up front but then the eagle in the background shows hope and freedom never being too far away.
I have a tendency to shoot images with very shallow depth of fields, so for a few shots, I knew I wanted to break that habit and shoot with wide DOF. This image was more a test to that more than an amazing story. It is a story of a quite American town.
This here is my new friend Stacy. She was pretty brave and was very willing for me to take her picture. She swan right up to me and was very interested in my camera. She even hopped out of the water onto the sidewalk to get a closer look. I went with a shallow field in this shot to zone in on her eye and head. She was a pretty duck and I wanted to show her spirit. I believe the eyes are the entrance to that place.
In this shot, I wanted to show her whole self. This little duck sure knew how to pose for a picture!
I have always been fascinated with downtown life in all generations. I love older movies when the characters to go the local newspaper stall and get the daily scoop and now going to school downtown and living so close to it, I am able to enjoy the things I have always seen in movies. (as lame as that sounds) Newspaper stations have always seemed cool to me.
This was a pretty building Riley and I came across. I wish I was able to get on a ladder and take other images I saw, but from the angle I was at, the images I wanted to take were impossible, so I decided to shoot low. This image has longer DOF but I focused the image more in the middle of it.
After this assignment, I came to realize that I tend to shoot a shallow DOF going from the left to right. I need to do personal assignment where I don't allow myself to shoot in that way at all. This image has a simplistic story to it. I love music and I bought this violin on ebay thinking I would teach myself to play. Two years later....
One more longer DOF example. These geese were very pretty and before they saw me take their picture they were in a single file row just paddling along.
This photo was another longer DOF test to me. I love the beauty in the trees and how something so green can grow in a city where industrial units thrive.
